Supplements: Hype vs Health

The supplement industry is booming — powered by slick marketing, flashy promises, and social media trends that make everything sound like a miracle in a bottle.

Every week, I hear some version of this from clients, friends, and family:

“I saw probiotics for weight loss!”

“Is curcumin the best for inflammation?”

“Cinnamon to balance blood sugar?”

“What about bovine organs for metabolism?”

“Roots and berries for hot flashes?”

“And… what is methylene blue?!”

Phenomenal flashy marketing with often mediocre results.

If you’re going to invest in supplements, it’s worth choosing professional-grade, high-quality, purity-tested products — not whatever happens to be trending online. Why? Because with supplements, quality means everything.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Label accuracy & specificity: No hidden ingredients under the guise of “proprietary blend”

  • Effective & appropriate dosages in bioavailable forms: magnesium comes in different forms, with different efficacy

  • Proper nutrient ratio: For example, too much zinc can deplete copper

  • No fillers or ingredients that don’t work for your body.

Case in point:

I recently saw a hot pink ad targeting women, selling a supplement for bovine organs. The concept caught my attention — I eat well, but I’ve never made it to eating organ meats, even though I know they’re nutrient-dense. I dove into the marketing claims, read the fine print, and researched the sourcing. Turns out, the product included ground thyroid — that’s not ideal for someone like me, with thyroid issues.  The website sure looked promising.  Just a monthly subscription of $44 with a “Free Mystery Gift!”

I found a professional grade bovine organ supplement that is a much better alternative!

Bottom line:

Many people fall into the trap of catchy supplement ads and end up with a recurring monthly subscription cost and cupboard full of half-used bottles. If you're going to spend money on supplements, make it count.

Professional-quality supplements often cost similar as the hyped-up ones — but they’re far more effective, safer, and can be personalized to meet real needs.
